Summer Energy-Saving Tips from a Lineman

We rounded up some of the questions we hear most often and sat down with Ryland, one of our linemen, to talk about how he helps his family save energy during the summer. When keeping the lights on is your day job, you tend to learn a thing or two about energy efficiency along the way. Ryland shared some simple, practical tips his family uses every day—straight from his own playbook.

1. What's the first thing you do to get your home ready for the Oklahoma heat?

We usually try to get an HVAC technician out to make sure everything’s in working order before the triple digits hit. They’ll check things over for you, clean out the filters, and make sure everything’s running smoothly. PSO even offers up to $200 off an HVAC tune-up! Also, don’t forget to replace your air filter so your AC unit keeps you cool all summer.

2. What are some other things that can be done to help the AC unit perform better during extreme heat?

Reducing the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures can help lower cooling costs. So, I pay attention to the weather and adjust my thermostat as needed, especially when I’m away. My smart thermostat makes this simple—and PSO even offers a thermostat rebate and an energy-saving program called Power Hours.

Another little trick to take some of the load off your AC unit is to keep curtains and blinds closed during the hottest part of the day.

3. Can ceiling fans help keep you cool during summer?

Yes! In the summer, I always set my ceiling fans to spin counterclockwise, so they push cool air down. Just remember to turn them off when you leave the room—fans cool people, not rooms.

4. Does sealing air leaks actually help save energy?

Absolutely! Caulking windows and doors can have potential savings of 10% to 20% on your energy bill, depending on the size of your home. I check for air leaks around my house to help keep my home's indoor temperature consistent and reduce how often my air conditioner runs throughout the summer.

5. How can you save energy while doing laundry during the busy summer months?

My wife and I wait until we have a full load before running the washer, which helps save both time and energy. We also use cold water for our laundry—it uses less energy and works just as well. And if you’re thinking about upgrading to a more efficient washer or electric dryer, PSO offers rebates that can help too.

6. How do you encourage energy-saving habits at home?

Getting kids into simple routines—like turning off lights when they leave the room and closing exterior doors behind them, especially when they're coming in and out from playing outside. These small things can help make a difference with saving energy.

7. What are some ways you track energy usage in your home?

I’ve found that using PSO’s Energy Management Tool really helps to see how much energy we’re actually using, so we can make adjustments if we want to help keep our bill low.

8. What's one last thing we should keep top of mind this season?

In our line of work, we always keep weather top of mind. We recommend staying prepared for any weather event, and you can always access our outage map for estimated restoration times and other helpful information. Another way to stay connected is by signing up for outage alerts. Y'all stay safe, and I'll be out there with my crew – working around the clock to keep your lights on.
