On November 17, 2022 PSO asked the Oklahoma Corporation Commission for approval of its Fuel-Free Power Plan to purchase three new wind farms and three new solar facilites located in Kansas and Texas. The proposed plan will help meet future power needs, generate 995.5 megawatts (MW), and protect customers from volatile energy costs driven by high natural gas prices.
PSO ownership puts reliability at the forefront by adopting design standards (including cold weather and turbine packages) that keep the facilities online throughout the year and especially during times of grid stess.
These facilities insulate PSO customers against sudden spikes in natural gas prices.
More than half of prospective businesses considering expanding or locating in PSO’s service area require access to renewable energy. These facilities make our service area more competitive for attracting jobs and investment.
The wind farms of the North Central Energy Facilities are estimated to save customers at least $156 million in fuel costs from October 2022 to December 2023.
Our wind plan, which was approved by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission on February 20, 2020, adds 675 megawatts (MW) of Oklahoma wind-generated power. The North Central Energy Facilities increases wind capacity while lowering customer bills and boosting Oklahoma’s rural economy with a $2 billion investment.
Customers will save over $1 billion, net of cost, during the time these three facilities are in service. This will provide a low-cost, renewable energy resource to help maintain stable rates over the next 30 years.
Approximately $2 billion was invested in Oklahoma’s economy with our investment totaling $908 million. This economic boost created jobs in construction, operations and maintenance while continuing to generate increased revenues for schools and infrastructure across our state.
Oklahoma wind will power more of the energy needed for homes and businesses. Affordable and renewable energy attracts new investment to our state while giving customers clean, reliable energy.
