VILLAGE OF SOMERSET EXCEEDS PARTICIPATION GOAL IN AEP OHIO COMMUNITY ENERGY SAVERS PROGRAM

December 1, 2014

AEP Ohio awards Somerset with financial incentives toward energy efficient lighting at Girls Softball Park

GAHANNA, Ohio, Dec. 1, 2014 – AEP Ohio, a unit of American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP), and the Village of Somerset partnered to help residents and businesses reduce energy use and costs through Community Energy Savers, a  pilot program offered by the company.

The Somerset Energy Savers Program ran from August through October 2014 with a goal of 144 participations in seven residential and business AEP Ohio energy efficiency programs. The goal   was a significant increase above historical participation.  While final participation counts will be concluded by Dec. 31, Somerset has already exceeded its aggressive goal and has earned two significant awards:

  1. Assistance in developing a sustainability roadmap that will serve as a framework for Somerset’s ongoing sustainability initiatives.
  2. Financial incentives in the amount of $11,520 to be used toward energy efficient lighting projects at the local Girls Softball Park.

An event to celebrate the award is scheduled for Dec. 6.

The village representatives, together with a team of volunteers from the girls’ softball team, reached out directly to individual community members, multi-family building owners and local businesses to provide information on the benefits of participating in AEP Ohio’s energy efficiency programs. To encourage residents and businesses to enroll in the programs, the village’s team adopted a number of marketing strategies, such as distributing promotional materials by direct mail, personalized e-mails, local media channels, posters, and participation in Somerset’s Oktoberfest.

“I want to thank all of the Somerset residents and businesses who have joined us in this effort by participating in the program, and the village representatives who brought this initiative to a success.  If you haven’t had an opportunity to do so, I would strongly encourage taking advantage of AEP Ohio’s energy efficiency programs. I am very excited about our results and the impact that our participants are having,” said Mayor Tom Johnson. “Additionally, we look forward to the new lighting at the Softball Park and developing a sustainability plan for our community.”

Jon Williams, manager of energy efficiency and demand response for AEP Ohio, said, “We applaud the village of Somerset’s commitment to sustainable practices and its success. “By participating in Community Energy Savers, residents and businesses in Somerset were able to learn about and take advantage of energy efficiency programs and incentives available through the company. We invite other communities to join us in what we believe is a win/win for communities, residents, businesses as well as AEP Ohio.”
