Support For Education

Education is a major focus for PSO…from participating in school partnerships, encouraging young children to learn about electrical safety, supporting Science-Technology-Engineering-Math (STEM) initiatives, and much more.

STEM Education

PSO is a strong supporter of Science-Technology-Engineering-Math (STEM) initiatives.

In 2015, we announced a $3 million gift over five years by our parent company's American Electric Power (AEP) Foundation to the Tulsa Community College (TCC) Foundation for the Credits Count program. This will enable thousands of Tulsa Public Schools students to explore STEM fields and gain college credits in high school.

Additionally, we provide grants to high school and middle school robotics teams, and to teachers for bringing STEM into classrooms.

Robotics Grants

PSO granted nearly $28,000 to robotics teams at 27 schools in our service area in 2016. The funds are provided through AEP’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Grants initiative, which is one of several company-wide programs to support Pre-K through Grade 12 student education emphasizing STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

FIRST is a multi-national robotics competition that teams professionals and students to solve an engineering problem in an intense and competitive way. More information on FIRST robotics programs can be found at www.usfirst.org.

Early Childhood Education

We strongly support early childhood education. Our sixth annual Bright Start, Right Start Preschool Teacher Science Workshop was conducted last summer to incorporate science into preschool. We partner with Tulsa's Bunche Early Childhood Development Center where employees read to 4 & 5-year-olds every Friday during the school year. We also partner with our communities to celebrate the Week of the Young Child each April.

Oklahoma FFA

PSO sponsors FFA activities and scholarships to encourage students across the state to develop STEM education and leadership skills. We're proud to work with FFA to develop future leaders throughout our service area.

School Partnerships

PSO is a Partner in Education with three schools within the Tulsa Public School system, as part of the Tulsa Regional Chamber of Commerce's Partner in Education program.

Central Junior-Senior High School

We have been partners with Central Junior-Senior High School since 1984 – a perfect match, since PSO is headquartered in the renovated building that housed the original school for 60 years. In 2015, PSO was named Partner of the Year by the Tulsa Regional Chamber to recognize our 30+ years of commitment to supporting Central.

PSO provides Central various types of assistance to support students, teachers and administrators. Over the years our partnership includes actions like these:

  • Launch and fund Leadership Central, a leadership program for selected seniors to visit college campuses, receive career awareness opportunities, and meet with business executives.
  • Provide funds for caps and gowns to graduating seniors who are unable to pay for them, so they can walk across the stage with their peers.
  • Provide holiday food baskets to Central students and their families in need at Thanksgiving.
  • Volunteer with Central students each year for the Tulsa Area United Way Day of Caring.
  • Provide volunteers for mock job interviews, test taking, job shadowing, career fairs and classroom presentations.
  • Provide Tulsa Ballet season tickets to the Dance Department.
  • Sponsor an annual year-end Teacher/Staff Appreciation Luncheon.
  • Sponsor the Senior Breakfast and the Eighth Grade Graduation Breakfast.
  • Sponsor a "Braves Buck" store where students may shop for small items, when exhibiting leadership and role-model behavior.
  • Sponsor the Yearbook.
  • Provide in-kind printing for projects such as the senior student portfolios.
  • Work with science teachers and the District to launch a recycling program on campus.
  • Provide applications to the company's Classroom Teacher Grant program for additional funding for enhanced curriculum and special projects.

Chouteau Elementary

PSO began our partnership with Chouteau, a Central feeder school, in the spring semester of 2016. Over 20 employees provide math mentoring and tutoring at Chouteau through the Me and My Math Mentor program launched by the Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance, to assist students with their math skills.

Bunche Early Childhood Development Center

For a decade, PSO employees have been reading to the four- and five-year-old students at Bunche on Fridays throughout the school year. During Week of the Young Child every April, PSO purchases a new book for each child to keep and take home to encourage reading.
