PSO Announces Significant Mutual Aid Restoration Efforts in Arkansas from May 25 Tornadoes

May 27, 2024

TULSA, Okla. (May 27, 2024) – Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO) has stepped up to assist their sister utility Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) in northwest Arkansas to restore power to the communities affected by Sunday morning’s tornadoes.  Severe storms and tornadoes swept through the region causing widespread power outages. Early assessment shows extensive damage to the electric system, including approximately 300 downed utility poles. PSO has dispatched over 200 lineworkers, forestry personnel, support staff and additional business partners to speed the restoration effort.

At the storm’s peak, approximately 19,000 customers were without power in the northwest Arkansas area.  Some customers in the Salina region in Oklahoma were also affected by the same storm and have an estimated restoration time of tonight at 11 p.m.

“Our hearts go out to the people of Arkansas. We believe in standing together during tough times, and this mutual assistance reflects our shared commitment to service and reliability,” said Leigh Anne Strahler, President and COO of PSO.  “We understand the importance of working to restore power as safely and as quickly as possible.”

The collaboration between the two utilities exemplifies the spirit of mutual assistance within the energy sector. In previous Oklahoma storms when PSO has faced challenges due to downed power lines, fallen trees, and damaged substations, SWEPCO dispatched a team of skilled technicians and lineworkers to aid in restoration efforts. These dedicated professionals worked tirelessly to repair infrastructure, replace damaged equipment, and restore electricity to homes and businesses.
