Nearly 70 high school students from Rogers and Mayes counties descended on PSO’s Northeastern Station recently as the facility hosted the second annual Lyle C. Shingleton Land Judging Contest. Developed by three Oklahoma conservationists in the early 1940’s, land and range judging contests test participant’s skills in judging the adaptability of land for various purposes including farming, range management and homesite construction. The principles learned through the contests can be valuable in career fields like environmental and agricultural management, natural resource conservation, home building and construction. Bud Ground, PSO’s manager for Environmental Affairs, said that much of the 1,300 acres on which Northeastern Station is located provides a perfect environment for land judging tests and that our existing relationship with the Rogers County Conservation District is what led to the event taking place at NES. “We are partnering with the Conservation District to develop a wildlife habitat and outdoor classroom at NES,” said Ground. “The information and experience we received from hosting the land judging competition will be very helpful in developing that plan.”
